We begin with Becca finishing her run as “Monica” in I’ll Be There For You, a Broadway musical with a very…familiar setting. She announces that she’s leaving New York for her hometown of Evergreen, Tennessee for the holidays. Her mother Tilly (Hayat Nesheiwat) is ecstatic, as are Becca’s younger brother Jack (Jon Lee) and family friend Lucille Sheridan (Janet Ivey). Less ecstatic? Becca’s childhood friend and high school sweetheart Sam, who’s carved out a peaceful life for themself as the bartender at their family bar, Sheridan’s.
Once Becca returns, Tilly and Lucille recall how good Sam and Becca were as a couple, and wonder what they can do. “No one likes meddling moms,” Lucille warns. “Are you kidding?!” Tilly replies. “Everyone likes meddling moms.” The pair hatches a plan to get their kids together – one that soon the whole town is in on! It helps that Becca is directing Evergreen’s annual Christmas pageant…the same pageant that Sam is designing the sets for.
Though Sam is detached and frosty at first and Becca isn’t sure how she fits with Evergreen now that she’s been gone for three years, the two gradually warm up to each other, recalling their shared childhood, especially the “Happy Clappy Reindeer Dance,” a chant they used to perform together.
However, Becca’s manager Charlotte Reese (Sarah Daddario) comes to town, telling Becca’s family (and Sam) that she has an offer from Hollywood! Becca insists that she’s happy with Broadway and wants to stay close to her family. Charlotte tells Sam that they’re holding Becca back. Refusing to be the one who prevents her from attaining her dreams, Sam breaks off the relationship.
Will Sam make their bold move to get Becca back?
